Over the last few weeks with the help from our European friends, in our mission of dating the jeans model and trying to understand the coding by VW, I thought it only right to include them in the research data I've been collating.
So to start, we have a mapping system to give a general location of our jeans, this I'm sure you'll agree will only grow and grow as more details come in, so if you want to help with the register, just fill out the form on the "Join us" page and fill out the details there, then we have the detailed database that for the most part will be kept private and confidential only showing part of the information relative to anyone else, the chart will be shown age order (oldest jeans first) and obviously grouped in model range Thanks to one of our members from Norway, Alf sent us some details and pictures of his jeans which at first threw me solely because of the vin, then it all fell into place.
As can be seen with the picture of the production plate the week build is for week 35 day 2 which puts it to 28th August 1973 a week earlier than our present forerunner, but the one on our uk list has a earlier numbered vin. We now strongly believe that VW Wolfsburg built the chassis's in batches to be sent out to Belgium for assembly, hence why there are gaps in VIN's on our charts, and why the production plate is the most important piece on your beetle, as it gives colour, allocated production date and place on the production line. So I have a plea for you to check your production plates to see if you have a older one than Alf's Well it's time for me to start another jigsaw puzzle, this time with our imported or overseas Jeans Beetle family of special models s761 s714 s716 & s744, all colours.
We need info from the production plate and also the vin minus the last three digits, as we are trying to set up a build database as in the picture attached, you don't need to worry about the special model number, build date or even colour we can work these out, you can even withhold your vin but it will help immensely if included. On the next run of decal kits I will be including personalised rear quarter sets and engine lid script, in the run, and for those who don't want to change the external look the engine lid script will be available on its own for placement anywhere, for example the face of the glove box.
The external decal kit as per original spec but personalised, will be offered at the same price of the original kit. Decal kit £23 posted (personalised) 5 piece kit Engine lid script £5 posted (personalised) 1 piece Original 1970's advert dated October 1973, courtesy of The Sun newspaper and our remake in colour. If anyone has any original adverts re: the jeans it would be great to here from you, its always great to see new clippings. and here's one published in Autometrix publications of "BEETLING" magazine of April 1974, using the same image and title for Goodliffe Garages LTD (Croydon)
